El Zaffah is a multimedia installation developed for the London Design Biennale 2025. It is a study of how cultures intersect, yet remain distinct. It examines the "Zaffah", a traditional musical wedding procession, from three different cultures: Egyptian, Qatari, and Palestinian. The analogue, custom made carpet features iconography from the musical instruments, performers, and dancers that comprise the Zaffah. The digital component includes a screen and multiple speakers embedded into the carpet, featuring performances from the musicians blended together into a single, but distinct, celebration.
El Zaffah was designed around the interaction of its analogue and digital components, allowing them to enhance each other while still offering unique experiences to audiences. The three cultures in the video and the carpet do the same thing; blend together to showcase they shared culture, while remaining distinct enough to highlight their individuality.
